The Civil Service Commission administers the Fire Department Merit System. The commission governs recruitment and promotional procedures and acts as a reviewing body for those discipline and discharge procedures not regulated by labor contracts.

One member is appointed by the mayor with commission approval, one member is selected by the members of the fire department, and the third member is selected by these two members. Members serve for a six-year term.

The Commission meets as required.

 

Members who serve three full consecutive terms may be reappointed at the discretion of  the city commission.
