The human rights commission was adopted by the Royal Oak city commission on July 25, 2022. The purpose of the human rights commission shall be to advise the city commission and the city manager and assist with efforts to bring greater equity and inclusion of diverse groups within the city of Royal Oak. 

There will be a total of nine members, with seven of those being voting members.  The remaining two non-voting members are the student member and the staff ex-officio member.  At least four voting members must be Royal Oak Residents, while the other three members are open to people with an interest in the community such as a business owner, non-resident property owner, or employee at a business in Royal Oak.  

The term is three years, except in this initial appointment process. In this initial appointment process the term, shall be:

2 members appointed to a 1-year term.
2 members appointed to a 2-year term.
3 members appointed to a 3-year term.

The student member's appointment term is for 1-year to coincide with the start of the school year through the start of the next school year. Student members must be high school students and have permission from their parent/guardian to participate. 

The commission will meet as needed.
